Hello friends!
Welcome back to the Mandala Traveler blog. I hope each of you is staying healthy and enjoying more freedom as the world continues to reopen.
Daniel and I took full advantage of being vaccinated and headed down to Orlando, Florida for a long-anticipated vacation. We spent six days exploring SeaWorld, Aquatica, Discovery Cove, and Icon Park, and it was such an incredible trip. I’ll be sharing more about each stop, but I wanted to kick off this mini-series with my absolute favorite: Discovery Cove.
Discovery Cove is an all-inclusive day resort connected to SeaWorld where you can relax, swim in beautifully designed environments, get close to amazing animals, and eat as much as you want. It truly felt like the kind of vacation paradise I’ve always dreamed of.
What’s Included at Discovery Cove
One of the best parts of Discovery Cove is how much is included in your day pass. It makes everything feel seamless and stress-free from start to finish.
Unlimited snacks and drinks
Buffet-style breakfast and lunch
Snorkeling gear
Wetsuits and life vests
Animal-friendly sunscreen
Towels
Lockers and showers
Access to the main waterways
Food for birds in the aviary
Lounge chairs throughout the park
Arrival and Breakfast Experience
Discovery Cove opens at 7:30, allowing guests to get an early start. We arrived a little after 8 due to a shuttle issue, but the check-in process was still smooth. Since the park limits attendance to around 1,300 guests per day, the lines were minimal compared to other parks.
The welcome area felt like a tropical resort lobby, complete with a thatched roof, wooden beams, and a dolphin sculpture hanging from the ceiling. We were given lanyards with our names and assigned lunch time, along with a small map of the park.
After checking in, we headed to breakfast at the Laguna Grill. Walking through the park for the first time felt like stepping into a tropical oasis, with lush greenery, bright flowers, and even parrots perched along the paths.
Breakfast was buffet-style, and we loaded up on everything from fresh fruit and pastries to eggs, bacon, and French toast.
Getting Set Up for the Day
After breakfast, we made our way to grab lockers and gear. The locker area was conveniently located near the showers, which we really appreciated later in the day.
Staff helped us find properly fitting wetsuits and life vests, and we were given snorkel gear as well. At the end of the day, you return the mask but get to keep the snorkel, which was a fun little bonus.
The Grand Reef Experience
Our first stop was the Grand Reef, and it ended up being my favorite part of the entire trip.
This massive saltwater habitat is filled with tropical fish and rays and designed like a natural lagoon with white sand and crystal-clear water. It’s kept at a refreshing temperature year-round.
In the shallow areas, you can wade while fish swim around your legs. But once you move into deeper sections, it feels like entering a completely different world. There were so many species of fish, and I saw types I’d never even encountered before.
Swimming alongside the rays was both thrilling and a little intimidating. Some were small, while others were massive. They glided right past us, sometimes brushing against our legs or hands. Even knowing they’re safe, it still kept things exciting.
There’s also a section where you can get incredibly close to sharks, separated by glass. Watching them up close was both fascinating and slightly nerve-wracking.
We easily spent about three hours here, constantly discovering something new each time we swam through.
Snacks, Dolphins, and Relaxation Areas
After all that swimming, we grabbed snacks from one of the many stands. Everything from chips and pretzels to fruit and drinks was included, which made it easy to refuel without interrupting the day.
Next, we spent time at Dolphin Lagoon. While we didn’t upgrade to the dolphin swim experience, we still loved watching them play near the shore. They were incredibly interactive and often swam close to guests.
If we go back, I would definitely upgrade for the full experience.
We also took a relaxing break at Serenity Bay, a heated, beach-style pool surrounded by waterfalls and caves. It was the perfect place to unwind after being in the cooler reef water.
Wind-Away River and the Aviary
The Wind-Away River completely changed how I feel about lazy rivers. This one winds through caves, waterfalls, lush landscaping, and even an aviary.
The water here is freshwater, so floating isn’t as effortless as in the reef, but complimentary floatation noodles make it easy to drift along.
The aviary was one of the highlights of the day. It’s a large, walk-through space filled with hundreds of tropical birds. Staff hand out food, and many of the birds will land right on you to snack.
If you want the best experience, go in the morning when the birds are most active.
Freshwater Oasis and Animal Encounters
The Freshwater Oasis is home to marmosets and Asian small-clawed otters.
The marmosets can be a bit tricky to spot, but they’re usually more active during scheduled enrichment times. The otters, on the other hand, are incredibly fun to watch, especially when they’re swimming and playing.
We visited twice to catch them at different activity levels, and it was worth it.
Lunch and Final Thoughts
We scheduled our lunch for 1 p.m. and returned to Laguna Grill, where we had a wide variety of options, including steak, salmon, jerk chicken, burgers, and pulled pork, along with salads, sides, and desserts.
After lunch, we revisited several of our favorite spots and still found new things to enjoy. The park’s layout and limited capacity made it easy to get around and maximize our time.
Looking back, the only thing I wish we had done differently was upgrading for the dolphin swim. Otherwise, the experience was absolutely perfect.
Final Thoughts on Discovery Cove
Discovery Cove exceeded every expectation I had. Between the beautiful setting, incredible animal encounters, and all-inclusive convenience, it’s easily one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had.
If you’re considering a trip to Orlando and want something a little more relaxing and immersive than a traditional theme park, I can’t recommend Discovery Cove enough.
Thanks for stopping by, and I hope this gives you a clear idea of what to expect. Stay tuned for more posts from our Orlando trip, and as always, happy travels.
