Best 5 Things to Do at Northwest River Park

Best Things to Do at Northwest River Park in Chesapeake, VA

Hello, travelers and Hampton Roads residents! I have another outdoor Hampton Roads adventure for you this week based in Chesapeake, VA. After a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon there, and a few previous visits, I want to share some of the best things to do at Northwest River Park in a day.

This lovely 763-acre park offers a wide range of activities, from camping to disc golf and everything in between. Located in the southeast corner of Chesapeake near the North Carolina border, it’s a popular destination for residents of both states.

Park address: 1733 Indian Creek Rd, Chesapeake, VA 23322

Hiking, Biking, and Exploring Nature Trails

Northwest River Park features nearly 8 miles of hiking trails that wind through diverse natural habitats. Visitors can explore peaceful forest paths filled with wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, lizards, birds, and seasonal wildflowers.

Several trails run alongside streams, creeks, and the Northwest River, offering scenic water views. The Otter Point Trail includes a beautiful swamp overlook, while unique features like decorative bridges add charm to the experience.

For a well-rounded route, the Deer Island and Shuttle trails are excellent starting points and are accessible for both hikers and bikers. If you don’t have your own bike, rentals are available at the Camp Store for $5 per hour.

The park also offers six equestrian trails for horseback riders, though access requires a separate pass.

Boating on Lake Lesa

For visitors who enjoy being on the water, the park provides kayak, canoe, and paddleboat rentals at the Camp Store for $10 per hour.

While boating is restricted to Lake Lesa and not permitted on the river, the six-acre lake offers plenty of space for a relaxing paddle. It’s a great way to enjoy the scenery and spend time outdoors.

Rentals require an adult, 18 or older, with a valid license, and each boat must include at least one adult.

Fishing Spots and What to Expect

Fishing enthusiasts have two primary locations to choose from. Lake Lesa, located near the park entrance, is stocked with bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and seasonal trout.

Alternatively, anglers can head to the pier at the end of Deer Island Trail along the Northwest River. With Indian Creek and Smith Creek feeding into the river, this area supports a wider variety of fish, including Yellow Perch and Winter Striper.

All visitors aged 16 and older must have a valid Virginia freshwater fishing license. During trout season, an additional trout permit is required for fishing in the lake.

Picnic Areas and Relaxation Spots

If you’re planning a relaxing day outdoors, Northwest River Park has plenty of scenic picnic locations. Several shelters accommodate groups of up to 35 people, making them ideal for gatherings.

For a quieter experience, visitors can set up near Lake Lesa, along the riverbanks, or in open clearings beside the trails. These spots offer peaceful surroundings, but it’s wise to check for insects and wildlife before settling in.

Disc Golf and Recreational Activities

The park features an 18-hole disc golf course suitable for both beginners and experienced players. It’s one of the few courses in the area, making it a standout feature.

Visitors can bring their own equipment or rent discs for $3 per person. Day passes cost $2 per adult, while seniors over 55 and children under 12, with a paying adult, can enter for free. Frequent players may consider the $20 annual pass.

Passes and rentals are available at the Ranger Station.

Final Thoughts and Visitor Tips

If you haven’t visited Northwest River Park yet, it’s well worth adding to your list, especially if you’re in the Hampton Roads area. The park offers a wide variety of activities suitable for all ages and interests, making it an ideal destination for a day trip or even overnight camping.

It’s also a great alternative to the region’s beach-focused attractions, offering a refreshing change of pace with its natural setting and diverse recreation options.

If you’re planning a visit to Hampton Roads, this park deserves a spot on your itinerary. Whether you’re hiking, fishing, boating, or simply relaxing outdoors, Northwest River Park delivers a well-rounded experience.
