How to spend a fun-filled weekend in Danville & Pittsylvania County

How to Spend a Fun-Filled Weekend in Danville & Pittsylvania County, Virginia

If you’ve been following my blog for the past couple of weeks, you already know I recently fell in love with Danville & Pittsylvania County, Virginia (aka the SoSi Region). While spending a whirlwind weekend there with the local tourism board, I got a glimpse of what this up-and-coming region has to offer–and it didn’t disappoint. I was blown away by how much there was to see and do, and we barely scratched the surface.

The area has a fantastic mix of outdoor adventure, local culture, great food, and unique experiences I didn’t expect, and it’s already got me itching to go back and see more. And with so much to do so close together, it’s the perfect spot for a quick weekend getaway!

So if it’s not already, the SoSi Region needs to be on your radar. Today, I’m sharing my recommendation for a fun weekend itinerary (much less busy than mine was, don’t worry) that blends nature, activities, good food, and downtown charm.

Friday: Arrive & Settle Into Danville

The Pod Pittsylvania County

Assuming you start your weekend on a Friday afternoon, kick off your visit with a quick stop at The Pod in Gretna. This cozy little cafe and gift shop is a bit out of the way for most of the itinerary, but it’s definitely worth a stop if you’re coming from that direction. I highly recommend their Pimento Cheese Croissant sandwich. It’s absolutely divine.

Check In at The Bee Hotel

If The Pod isn’t on your way or you’re coming in later, no worries. Head straight to Danville and check in at The Bee Hotel. This gorgeous boutique hotel occupies the town’s old newspaper building, but you’d never be able to tell. The modern rooms are so chic and spacious, with full kitchens, cozy sitting areas, and luxe bathrooms. There’s also a rooftop patio that’s perfect for gazing over the downtown.

It’s also centrally located in Danville, so you can easily access most of the town’s highlights and make little daytrips outside of town as needed. I’ll be sharing a full review of the Bee in an upcoming post, so stay tuned if you want more details.

Explore Downtown & the River District

Small Park Downtown Danville

Once you’ve settled in and dropped off your luggage, take some time to get your bearings with a walk around Danville’s River District. This beautiful downtown area blends old industrial architecture with fresh elements for a truly unique vibe. I personally loved how many of the original brick buildings now serve as modern storefronts, restaurants, and apartments. And it’s far from drab. They’ve dressed everything up with bright flowers, fresh coats of paint, and little “pocket parks” that keep things interesting.

However, the River District’s gem is undoubtedly the brand-new Riverfront Park. You’ll definitely want to take a stroll around this gorgeous area along the Dan River. The park has so much to offer, from a playground (complete with a river otter slide) and splash pad to group gathering spaces, ping pong tables, and a scenic overlook. It’s the perfect spot for a little late-afternoon/sunset stroll with unhindered riverfront views.

Dinner: King Cropp Kitchen

When dinner time rolls around, head over to King Cropp Kitchen for some absolutely delightful farm-to-table fare. Their expansive menu has everything from fried pickles and truffle waffle fries to mac bowls and southern-fried entrees. I highly recommend the Buffalo mac (fried chicken with garlic buffalo sauce and ranch served alongside creamy mac & cheese) and the truffle tots when they’re on the menu.

Everything is pure comfort food, which is all I want after a long day of travel and exploring, so this feels like the perfect spot for your first dinner in Danville.

Optional Evening Activity: River District Social

River District Social Duckpin bowling

If you still have some energy to spare, head over to River District Social, Danville’s premier sports bar and entertainment center. It’s got good food, drinks, live music, and plenty to do, from golf simulators and duck pin bowling to arcade games and pool tables. It’s a great spot to hang out in the evening while the rest of town closes down.

Saturday: Discover Downtown & Experience SoSi

After a good night’s rest at The Bee Hotel, get ready for an action-packed day exploring Danville and the SoSi region!

Breakfast: Crema & Vine

Kick things off with breakfast at Crema & Vine. This eclectic coffee shop and wine bar in Danville has a fantastic selection of just about every kind of drink. The decor is so fun, too, with deep leather couches, colorful throw pillows, and giant glass light fixtures. For food, grab some fresh pastries or try the breakfast bagels.

SoSi Safari & Shopping

After breakfast, kick off your day’s adventures with a detailed exploration of Danville’s downtown area. I highly recommend picking up a copy of the SoSi Safari guide from the Visitor’s Center and using it to dive into Danville’s little details. The “safari” will lead you around town in search of animal statues, artwork, and carvings, many of which are very unexpected (like a 7-foot-tall red elephant named Eldrige). I guarantee you’ll pop into some corners you would’ve missed otherwise.

Main Street Danville
Cute shops in Downtown Danville

As you go, take the opportunity to check out some of Danville’s local shops. Many chic boutiques line the historic main street, with books, antiques, clothes, fishing gear, and more. Keep in mind that many of these shops have limited hours, with some open only a few hours on Saturday, so the morning is the best time to check them out.

Lunch: Golden Leaf Bistro

When lunchtime rolls around, grab a seat at the Golden Leaf Bistro! They actually offer brunch until 3 pm on Saturdays if you’re in the mood for more breakfast fare, or you can order from their standard lunch menu. I’ve done both, and I highly recommend their biscuits and gravy with fried apples on the side, as well as their chicken fajita egg rolls and chicken garlic parmesan flatbread.

Afternoon: Catch an Event

Stomach full, it’s time to head out of Danville for some local adventure. This is a choose-your-own-adventure, depending on 1) what’s on the schedule and 2) what you like to do.

Virginia International Raceway

VIR raceway, sosi
You may even win a car if you show up!

Your first option is a visit to VIR, the Virginia International Raceway. It is a major racing hub, and they host events throughout the year that draw people from all over to race and watch. They even have RV parking and a hotel for overnight guests.

If you’re into racing, this is a great place to catch an event. However, if there’s nothing on the schedule, it’s still worth a visit. On non-race days, private groups and racing clubs often take over the track to race each other more casually, and they’re really fun to watch. Plus, VIR has tons of extra stuff to do, like go-karting, off-road vehicles, and a shooting range.

Just be sure to check the calendar before you go, so you know what to expect.

Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex

Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex, Chatham
The complex can modify the floor to handle all sorts of events.

If rodeos, kennel club competitions, or MotoCross are more your style, check out the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex. Located in Chatham, this sprawling conference center and arena hosts all sorts of cool competitions and events. There’s honestly something different just about every week.

And the events are not tiny either. The complex has a large arena, with multiple barns and paddocks outside to hold livestock and horses during competitions. So come ready to have fun and expect crowds.

Dinner: Schoolfield Restaurant

Schoolfield Restaurant Fried Green Tomato Chicken Danville

After a busy day of action, you deserve a high-class meal, so settle in for dinner at Schoolfield Restaurant. This is the town’s only white tablecloth restaurant, and the perfect excuse to dress up a bit and enjoy a slow evening.

Schoolfield is known for its seafood (upscale crab cakes, whiskey sea scallops, and pan-seared salmon), but it also has a shockingly delicious chicken and steak menu. Since I can’t have seafood, I can only attest to what I ate, but the other girls raved about their seafood dishes. If you can’t have/aren’t in the mood for fish, definitely try the Fried Green Tomato Chicken. It won’t disappoint.

Sunday: One Last Taste of SoSi

On your last day, balance some outdoor fun with an unexpected bit of interactive learning!

Breakfast: Link’s Coffee House Cafe

Links Coffee House Cafe Danville

For breakfast, take a short walk from The Bee to Link’s Coffee House Cafe. They have a huge coffee menu with all sorts of specialty options, plus a giant bagel and cream-cheese menu that just about overloaded my brain. They also have lots of fresh pastries if that’s more your thing. But I can attest that the bagels are delicious and loaded with cream cheese.

Walk the Riverwalk

Riverwalk Danville
Riverwalk Trail Views

Today’s main event is the Danville Riverwalk, a 13-mile paved trail that weaves through downtown and along the Dan River. You can access it from the Riverfront Park or several other parks around town and get a beautiful taste of Danville’s scenery. It’s also bikable if that’s more your style. If you only want a short walk, start at the Riverfront Park, cross the bridge, and head right until you reach the “Crossing at the Dan.” You’ll walk over an old railroad bridge and end up right at your next destination.

Danville Science Center

Danville Science Center Rain Maze

Your final indoor attraction of the weekend is the Danville Science Center. Now, while it’s aimed at kids and learning, don’t brush it off just yet. This science center is absolutely bursting with fun for all ages, thanks to its extensive interactive exhibits.

The main building has two floors of hands-on learning, with machines, simulators, and games of all types. You can weave through a rain maze, run on a hamster wheel, and test your skill at building an earthquake-proof tower (to name a few). The center also has an impressive planetarium with a domed screen and a STEM lab with all sorts of classes.

Across the road, the science center continues in the Amtrak building, with two more interactive exhibits and a gorgeous butterfly garden out back. They actually import new butterflies regularly since their life cycles are so short, and they have some beauties.

This works well for a casual last day because you’re free to spend as long here as you like before it’s time to wrap up your day. And it’s not dependent on weather, so that’s always a win!

Lunch: Midtown Market

Before you head out, grab lunch from Midtown Market. This little supermarket has a deli section that makes the best sandwiches! They offer to-go boxes with your sandwich and side of choice, chips, and a dessert. You can take it with you on the road, or stop at one of the local parks to enjoy it before you leave. Either way, it’s a convenient way to wrap up your weekend.

Tips for Planning Your SoSi Weekend

View from the Riverfront Trail

  • Check the event calendars first. VIR and ODAC can completely change what your Saturday looks like, so check ahead then pack and plan accordingly.
  • Plan downtown shopping for Saturday daytime: Many shops aren’t open late on Fridays or have limited hours, so do your shopping during this prime time.
  • Don’t overpack the itinerary. Danville & Pittsylvania County have a ton to see, but I recommend keeping things simple if you want to feel refreshed on Monday.
  • Check restaurant/attraction hours before you go. Like the shops, many restaurants and attractions have limited weekend hours, so check ahead if you deviate from what I laid out here.
