Simple Overview of the Virginia Air & Space Science Center

Visiting the Virginia Air and Space Science Center

One of the things I love most about the Hampton Roads area is its unique mix of military, government, and history-focused attractions. You will find everything from historic homes to interactive museums that showcase the region’s deep connection to aviation and space exploration.

One standout experience is the Virginia Air and Space Science Center. Not only is it an engaging museum, but it also serves as the official visitor center for NASA’s Langley Research Center.

We had the chance to visit with friends earlier this summer, and it turned out to be an incredibly fun and educational experience. The museum is packed with exhibits, hands-on activities, and historic aircraft, all set in an immersive environment filled with suspended planes and space-themed galleries.

What to Know Before You Visit

Here are a few helpful details to plan your trip:

  • Admission is $20 for adults, $17 for active military, $16.50 for children, and $18 for seniors
  • Entry includes access to an IMAX film
  • Location: 600 Settlers Landing Road, Hampton, Virginia
  • Free parking is available nearby, with additional paid options in the area
  • Hours are typically Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You can easily spend two to three hours here, especially if you take time to explore each exhibit and watch the IMAX film.

This is also a great activity for families. While there is plenty of educational content, there are also interactive displays and even a small play area for kids.

The Main Exhibits at the Center

The museum is divided into six main exhibit areas, each offering a different perspective on aviation and space exploration.

Adventures in Flight

This exhibit focuses on the history of aviation, with a strong emphasis on contributions from the Hampton Roads area.

You will learn about the Wright brothers and their early experiments, including models of their wind tunnel and the Wright Flyer. There are also displays featuring flight suits, bomber jackets, and aircraft from different eras.

Interactive features make this section especially engaging. You can step inside a passenger jet, try out a flight simulator, and even design and test your own paper airplanes.

Space Explorer Gallery

The Space Explorer Gallery is one of the most immersive areas of the museum.

It is designed to feel like stepping into outer space, with exhibits showcasing spacecraft, training simulators, and ongoing space research. While parts of this gallery may be updated or renovated, it remains a highlight of the visit.

Just outside this area, you will find additional interactive stations where you can experiment with launching rockets and explore space-related simulations.

Aircraft Displays

Aircraft are displayed throughout the museum, suspended from the ceiling at different heights.

To fully appreciate these exhibits, it is worth exploring multiple levels of the building. Each level offers a different perspective, allowing you to get closer to the planes and see details you might otherwise miss.

Spacecraft Exhibit

The Spacecraft section highlights major milestones in NASA’s history.

Here, you can see incredible artifacts such as the Apollo 12 Command Module, the Gemini Test Capsule, and the Mercury spacecraft. These exhibits provide a deeper understanding of space missions and the technology behind them.

There are also interactive elements where you can simulate launching a rocket and learn about astronaut training.

Exploration Station

The Exploration Station is a highly interactive area designed to engage visitors in hands-on learning.

Although some activities may occasionally be limited, this section typically includes touchscreen displays and experiments that allow you to explore scientific concepts in a fun and accessible way.

The Solarium

The Solarium offers a quieter but equally fascinating experience.

This exhibit features large screens displaying detailed footage of the sun’s surface. The visuals show the movement and energy of solar activity, paired with audio created from actual solar data.

It is a unique and mesmerizing way to learn about our closest star.

Don’t Miss the Rooftop Views

Before you leave, be sure to visit the rooftop viewing area.

From here, you can take in panoramic views of the Hampton waterfront. It is a great way to wrap up your visit and enjoy a different perspective of the area.

Final Thoughts

The Virginia Air and Space Science Center is an engaging and well-rounded experience that blends education with hands-on fun.

Whether you are interested in aviation, space exploration, or just looking for a family-friendly activity, this museum offers something for everyone.

Even if you cannot see everything in one visit, there is more than enough to make it worthwhile.
